A functional and computationally complex closed-loop neuromuscular control system is needed to regulate the functioning of a complex CNS. The regulation of movement in human and other mammalian species is primarily achieved through modulation of the excitability of the motor units, through the action of feedback from central to peripheral receptors. The human CNS displays the capacity to modulate the excitability of motor units through a heterogeneous set of reflex pathways, and these modulatory pathways can be modulated during volitional and non-volitional actions. In addition, the CNS possesses the capacity to modulate the flow of information to and from other parts of the CNS, via interconnections between cortical and subcortical structures. How can these two capabilities be accomplished? In this chapter, I will focus on the spinal cord as a regulator of motor output. There are at least three possible mechanisms by which the CNS may accomplish its control of the motor output. These are: 1) the control of the discharge properties of individual motor units, 2) the control of the discharge of
